A Brief History of Father’s Day
Every year, we celebrate Father's Day to honor the man of the house, our DADS. An interesting question is, where did the concept of Father's Day really come from? Here's the answer!
The concept of Father's Day is rooted in the tradition of celebrating Mother's Day. As per history, a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd established the observance of Father's Day in 1909. Sonora and her siblings were raised by her widower father alone. She was inspired by her dad and felt that there should also be a special day equivalent to Mother's Day to recognize fathers.
The first-ever Father's Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. And in 1972, President Richard Nixon officially recognized Father's Day as a national holiday.
Father’s Day Celebration And Activities
Father's Day will be here before you know it! Have you made any plans yet to celebrate this special day with your dad? Just in case you haven't yet, maybe you can get an idea here as we list down some of the Father’s Day celebrations and activities that are being practiced in the present.
Our dads are our real-life superheroes. They do the best that they can to provide for the whole family while throwing in some corny dad jokes on the side. From the most serious stuff to the coolest and simplest things, they are always one call away. They are the man of the house and the king of the grill.
On their special day, even in our own littlest ways, let us show them our never-ending love and appreciation. Here are some of the ways you can celebrate Father's Day:
During Father's Day, family members usually prepare special gifts for dads. Some give greeting cards with thoughtful messages written on them, while some give other items as presents. When shopping for a Father's Day gift, it is always best to consider which item your dad's personality and hobbies.
Some give personalized mugs to dads who couldn't start their day without their caffeine fix. Some give hand tools and equipment to their dads who love being a handyman. Some give their dads a necktie or a new pair of shoes to upgrade their dads' wardrobes.
Aside from presents, some people prefer to gift their dads a special treat in form of a memorable experience to mark this occasion. One way to celebrate Father's Day is to just spend the day bonding with them. Some surprise their dads by cooking their old man's favorite meal or spending time learning about their hobbies or interests. If your dad loves movies, you can prepare a movie marathon session with your dad or go on camping if he loves the outdoors.
While others have the luxury of spending Father's Day with their dads, some of us don't. Especially with the onset of the pandemic, most family members cannot easily travel or be with their loved ones to prioritize everyone's safety. The pandemic taught us to express our love to our families and friends virtually especially on these occasions.
This Father's Day, an alternative way to express your appreciation to your dad and celebrate with them is by having a voice or video call with them to let them know that they are loved. Some also go the extra mile by having some gifts delivered to their dads no matter where they are.
Wrapping Up
Dads are one of the best blessings that the universe has given us. From the moment we were born, they were always there to make us feel safe and loved. Our dads serve as our moms' safety net, the constant supporter who always looks out for the whole family. A listening ear to our problems, and a sound advisor whenever we need one. The first man we've ever loved.
This Father’s Day, we also give importance and appreciation to all father figures who served as our dads. We know that the role that they have is not easy but they have willingly taken it because of their unconditional love.
Let us also remember to show our appreciation to all single moms out there who took on the role of both mom and dad for their children. They deserve a big salute for their dedication.
To say that we are thankful is an understatement for all the things that our dads and father figures have done to give us the best life that they can provide. This Father's Day, let them feel how much they are loved. No matter how big or little your gift may be, it is always the thought that can make our dads' hearts flutter every time.
Wishing all the superhero DADS and all father figures around the world a happy Father's Day! May you have an awesome time spending your special day with everyone that you love. Stay awesome!
